Changes at the Library
When Kelly arrived at the library the next day, she was surprised to see that lights were on already, even though it was half an hour before the library was scheduled to open.
When she went inside, her surprise increased. Mrs. Stark was sitting at the circulation desk.
âWe had a meeting of the Executive Board yesterday,â Lois Stark said without preamble. âWe decided that itâs not a good idea for the library to have someone on staff whoâs suspected of being a murderer.â
Kelly put down her purse and took off her coat. âMeaning what?â
âI sent Carmela home. Sheâll be on leave until the murder is solved.â
âYou did this without consulting me? Iâm the director; Iâm in charge of staff.â
âThese are extraordinary circumstances. Iâm hearing a lot of talk about Carmela and her disagreements with Mrs. Knesbitt. If Carmela was in any way involved in this unfortunate dilemma,â Mrs. Stark said delicately, âitâs better for her if sheâs not in contact with the public until her reputation is restored.â
Not for the first time, Kelly was glad that sheâd kept her car and life insurance policies with her former agent, rather than switching to Mrs. Starkâs company upon being hired by the library.
âI donât agree,â she said hotly. âWhat does the rest of the board say?â
âIt will be discussed at the regular meeting at the end of the month.â
âThen itâs fortunate that February is a short month!â Kelly said as she turned into the office.
âIn order to help you, since youâll be busier now, working on your own, Iâll be handling the finances,â Mrs. Stark continued, standing in the entry to Kellyâs office.
âThereâs no need,â Kelly said. âIâm the director. Library directors handle the finances.â
âIn normal times, of course. But these are not normal times. Iâll set up a little work area for myself over here by the copier. Iâll be out of your way,â Mrs. Stark smiled, evoking to Kellyâs mind a malevolent Cheshire cat. âAnd youâll be able to perform your duties as expected. Weâll add a few hours to Chloeâs schedule so that you can maintain the same schedule.â
âCarmela needs her paycheck,â Kelly said. âAll she has is a small pension from her dead husband. Sheâs too young to collect social security; sheâs not old enough to retire yet. And Chloe goes to class; sheâs not able to just change her schedule on a whim.â
âIâm sure Carmela has something saved; sheâs very attentive to finances, isnât she? Thatâs my understanding as far as the issues with the bus trip go. Chloe will surely be able to help in the evening when youâve opened the library; sheâs a student and will be glad to earn a little extra money.â
The two womenâs gazes locked. âThe bus trip issues have nothing to do with Carmelaâs work performance.â
âI donât agree. I was at your church breakfast yesterday and I was asked by several people about Carmelaâs connection to the Groundhog Day murder of Lyola Knesbit.â
Are they the same people who ask about your connection to your son, whoâs in prison for murder? Kelly wondered.
